New Access to Old News: Library Expands Historic Newspaper Coverage

July 23rd, 2010 by David Michalski
Looking for primary source material or the flavor of everyday life in America in the twentieth or nineteenth centuries? These newspapers can open a window to history as it was played out in the daily papers.
The University Library has contracted with ProQuest Historical Newspapers to expand its coverage of historic newspapers. Researchers are able to search the full text and retrieve digital images of the newspapers as they appeared.
In the ProQuest Historical Newspapers database University Library patrons can now access:
The New York Times 1851-2004
The Chicago Tribune, 1849-1987
The Chicago Defender 1905-1975
Los Angeles Times 1881-1986
San Francisco Chronicle 1880-1922 (will eventually extend back to 1865)
Wall Street Journal 1889-1990
Washington Post 1877-1993For a comprehensive list of the Library’s Newspaper databases see the
