Accessing online CRC books through the VPN

May 8th, 2009 by Phoebe Ayers

The UC Davis library subscribes to several CRCnetBASE products, including ENGnetBASE, MATHnetBASE and BIOSCIENCEnetBASE among many others. These packages contain online books from CRC press, which can be searched and downloaded in PDF form. The books are findable through the Harvest library catalog — just search for the title of the book you are looking for. crclogo

The online CRC books are restricted to UC Davis faculty, students and staff, so you must be on-campus or logged in through the library VPN or proxy server to access them.

Unfortunately, the CRC books do not work well with the VPN. CRCnetBASE eBooks consist of a Table of Contents PDF and separate PDFs for the book’s chapters. Links to other chapters from the Table of Contents PDF do not work when viewed through the VPN.

Solutions for using online CRC books from off-campus include: Read the rest of this entry »

Springer E-books are here!

May 6th, 2009 by Karen Andrews

The PSE Library has acquired online access to all Springer eBooks published from 2005-2009 as part of a UC Libraries eBook trial. springerlink-logo

We will have perpetual access to these books. The experiment will run throughout the 2009 calendar year. During this time, we plan not to purchase any Springer books in print that are available online as part of the eBook package. We will be gathering your feedback on every aspect of the eBook trial to help us plan future acquisitions.

Online books from Springer are linked in the Harvest and Melvyl catalogs. You may also see what we have and search Springer book content by going directly to:

http://springerlink.com/

You can search this site for both book and journal content published by Springer, or limit your results to only books. Books are available as pdf downloads by chapter.

NOTE: If you want to access these books when off-campus, remember to authenticate first via the VPN. Once you’ve logged in, to go directly to SpringerLink, paste the SpringerLink URL into the empty box in the top right corner of the VPN menu screen.

Dictionary of Scientific Biography now online

May 3rd, 2009 by Phoebe Ayers

The UC Davis Libraries recently acquired The Complete Dictionary of Scientific Biography, the online version of the massive Dictionary of Scientific Biography (which is available in print in PSE reference).

The Complete Dictionary of Scientific Biography contains thousands of profiles of ancient and modern scientists in all fields. The online edition contains the original 18-volume set, plus 775 new entries of 20th Century scientists, plus scientists that were omitted in the first edition. The entries, which are often written by eminent historians of science, include bibliographies and further reading and are available in pdf (a scan of the printed work) for download. The DSB is a great resource for anyone studying the history of science, or if you’re just curious about their favorite historical scientist.

Sample entries: Frederick Gardner Cottrell | Leonhard Euler | Charles Babbage

Access the DSB here or through the Harvest library catalog. (Search for the title “Complete Dictionary of Scientific Biography.” Note: you must be on campus or logged in through the VPN to get access).
